Wilfred Gerald Gillings was born in Stratford St. Mary in 1888,(Samford Q2-1888 4A:808), son of George and Frances Matilda GILLINGS (née FISKE).

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at Upper Street, Stratford St.Mary's with his father George GILLINGS [36] Police constable born Debenham; his mother Fanny Matilda [29] born Wrentham; brother Clifford H ][8] born Wrentham.

1901 census...Aged 13, he was at The Police Station, Naughton with his parents; brother Clifford; sisters Hilda H [10] born Stratford St Mary, Doris G [4] and Kitty F [3] both born in Great Cornard.

1911 census...Aged 23, single, garden labourer, he was lodging at Holly House, Ickburgh, Mundford with widower William CHILVERS [77] a retired miller born Ickburgh and his grand-daughter Maud CHILVERS [22] born Ickburgh. His parents (father now retired) and sister Kitty Florence, were living in Bury Road, Brandon.

He married Maud Mary CHILVERS (b. 30-7-1888) in 1913,(Swaffham Q3-1913 4B:725) later of Folly House, Ickburgh, Mundford. They had two daughters, Audrey Sarah (14-9-1913) and Margery Miriam (17-1-1917).

He enlisted in Brandon.

With his service records not being found it cannot be said exactly when he was wounded. His battalion were in Arleux at that time and suffered heavy and accurate shelling on the 10th and 11th May. Several Casualty Clearing Stations used this cemetery.
